I have been playing piano since September 1996. My teacher is Michael Pope. Before I played piano I played Appalachian dulcimer and guitar.
I began playing in public almost from the start. Here is a list of some the places where I have performed.
The majority of the songs I play are show tunes, standards and movie themes. My favorite Broadway composers are Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen. I also like George Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. I also play many songs in other styles. They don't necessarily fit, but I love them so I play them.
During the past year I have played as an accompanist at Charles House, an adult day-care center in Chapel Hill. The people there, who belong to the WWII generation, have greatly influenced my musical style. I have learned a large number of American Traditional songs, such as "Shenandoah" and "Molly Malone", because it was their generation that brought those songs into popularity.
